We are aware that we haven’t been able to update you recently about ABP’s proposed developments in the Ipswich Marina area. The reason for the delay lies in our commitment to incorporate feedback from a diverse range of stakeholders on the initial vision shared in July 2023.

ABP has been actively engaging with a variety of parties to ensure that the proposal we submit to planning strikes a balance between incorporating diverse perspectives from the marina and wider community, while ensuring operational efficiency and maritime safety.

As we are now at a point where we are preparing to submit our proposal to Ipswich Borough Council and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), we wanted to make sure berth holders were updated accordingly.

The adjustments from the original proposal shown at the drop-in at Old Custom House in July 2023 include:

  • The addition of 14 fully serviced berths on the Northern side (formerly Neptune Marina), which can berth vessels up to 24 metres.

  • The construction of a new welfare unit to ensure the Northern side is fully equipped with modern facilities.

  • Removing the existing welfare unit, currently known as ‘The Middle Block’, and constructing a brand-new welfare unit on the Island site.

  • There is currently no plan to expand the Southern side of the marina, and therefore maintaining the current open water space.

  • A review to transition to self-service electrical provision.

We would also like to take this opportunity to highlight some improvements that the Beacon Marina team has been implementing since the 2023 customer questionnaire, and ahead of the new season. This includes:

  1. New uniforms for the Marina team, which complement the leisure environment

  2. The installation of rebranded signage

  3. A WiFi survey, which took place in February 2024, to review how WiFi performance can be improved

  4. Reinstated events calendar for 2024, with a successful turnout to the recent Lock Tours

  5. All 36 safety ladders to be replaced and installed within the next 8 weeks.

These ongoing and proposed improvements showcase our commitment to enhancing the marina
experience for all.

We understand you may have questions about the management, pricing and berth allocations associated with what we have outlined. However, it’s crucial to emphasise that this proposal is still subject to ABP board and planning approval, and many details such as these cannot be definitively provided until certainty around planning is achieved.

Subject to planning approval, the earliest likely date for any works to commence would be the beginning of 2025. We acknowledge the ongoing uncertainty – your understanding and support during this phase are greatly appreciated.

We look forward to shaping a positive future for Ipswich Marina.
